Treatment for ADHD in Southern California

Because Alter’s behavioral health centers treat severe mood or psychotic disorders, most clients don’t come here solely to treat ADHD, but are living with ADHD in addition to another disorder.

However, we are very equipped to help clients understand how an ADHD diagnosis impacts overall life, and how they can learn to cope better with its symptoms like hyperactivity, focus issues, and executive dysfunction.

Inspirational Client Success Story

“Alter Behavioral Health truly saved my life. I have GAD, MDD, and ADHD, and in September of 2021 I was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. I began spiraling into some really destructive tendencies and poor coping mechanisms. I was destroying my life. Finally, in early August of 2022, I decided I needed help. I began researching inpatient psychiatric facilities and was unable to find any in my home state of Utah that I felt were right for me. Then, by the grace of some higher power, I discovered Alter Wellness Care, and from there, Alter Behavioral Health: a truly research-based, holistic, mental health treatment facility in Irvine, CA.

Alter has an amazing team of people that develop easy, personal relationships with each of their clients. They truly want to see us succeed, to be happy again. To love ourselves and get the most out of our lives. Alter Behavioral Health is a beautiful facility with some amazing integrative programs!

From an in-house chef and nutritionist, to yoga and breathwork, from art therapy, to the super fun outings we go on on the weekends, I have been able to fully take care of my mind, body and soul. Not only that, I’ve been able to live like a /person/, not like a patient. They recognize us as the unique individuals we are with varying goals and needs. The respect from staff and the relationships we form with them are genuine and lasting.

In just this past month, the changes that me, my family, and friends have noticed have been incredible, and I can’t wait to see what my future with Alter Wellness Care holds :)”

How Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Impacts the Family

ADHD greatly impacts daily routines and responsibilities, and family members may find it difficult to deal with disrupted routines. Tasks like getting ready, completing homework or work, and following household rules can be challenging with someone with ADHD, and this can be a source of frustration and tension within a family unit. Loved ones may also suffer from stress and burnout of trying to help their ADHD family member manage their responsibilities.

Frequently Asked Questions about ADHD

What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning and development. ADHD is typically diagnosed in childhood, but symptoms can persist into adolescence and adulthood.

Early identification and intervention are essential for managing ADHD symptoms effectively and supporting individuals in achieving their full potential. With proper treatment and support, individuals with ADHD can learn to manage their symptoms and lead successful, fulfilling lives.

To date, the majority of adults with ADHD have not been diagnosed. As such, the first step in treating ADHD is diagnosis.

The core symptoms of ADHD can be grouped into two main categories:

Inattention:

  • Difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or activities
  • Easily distracted by extraneous stimuli
  • Difficulty organizing tasks and activities
  • Forgetfulness and frequently losing or misplacing items necessary for tasks
  • Difficulty following through on instructions or completing tasks
  • Avoidance or dislike of tasks that require sustained mental effort

Hyperactivity and impulsivity:

  • Excessive fidgeting, squirming, or restlessness
  • Difficulty remaining seated or staying still when expected
  • Excessive talking or blurting out answers before questions are completed
  • Difficulty waiting for one’s turn in conversations or activities
  • Impulsive decision-making and risk-taking behavior
The exact cause of ADHD is not fully understood, but it is believed to result from a combination of genetic, environmental, and neurobiological factors. Research suggests that abnormalities in certain brain regions involved in attention, impulse control, and executive functioning may contribute to the development of ADHD. Additionally, factors such as prenatal exposure to toxins, low birth weight, prematurity, and early childhood adversity may increase the risk of developing ADHD.

ADHD symptoms can vary in severity and may present differently depending on the individual and their age. Some individuals may predominantly exhibit symptoms of inattention, while others may display symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity, or a combination of both. ADHD can significantly impact various areas of functioning, including academic performance, social relationships, occupational functioning, and overall quality of life. Some common symptoms of ADHD are:

  • Trouble prioritizing and organizing
  • Difficulty appreciating long-term consequences
  • Restlessness
  • Low tolerance for frustration
  • Impulsiveness
  • Anxiety

Several medications have been found effective in treating ADHD. Stimulant medications such as methylphenidate (e.g., Ritalin, Concerta) and amphetamine-based medications (e.g., Adderall, Vyvanse) are commonly prescribed and work by increasing the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, improving attention and focus.

Non-stimulant medications like atomoxetine (Strattera) and guanfacine (Intuniv) are also used, targeting different neurotransmitters to help manage ADHD symptoms. Additionally, medications such as bupropion (Wellbutrin) or tricyclic antidepressants may be prescribed in some cases.

However, the choice of medication depends on individual factors such as the presence of other medical conditions and potential side effects, so it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the most appropriate treatment.

Treatment options for ADHD typically include a combination of medication, behavioral therapy, and educational interventions. While medication can effectively manage symptoms for many individuals, it’s not the only approach. Behavioral therapy can teach coping strategies and improve organizational skills and impulse control. Lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, adequate sleep, and a balanced diet, can complement treatment.

While medication can be helpful, it’s not always necessary, and some individuals may prefer non-medication approaches or have contraindications to medication. However, it’s essential to work with healthcare professionals to develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to individual needs.

Untreated or undiagnosed ADHD can lead to various risks and challenges. These may include academic underachievement, difficulties in social relationships and family dynamics, low self-esteem, increased risk of substance abuse, and higher rates of accidents and injuries due to impulsivity and inattention. Early diagnosis and intervention can mitigate these risks and improve long-term outcomes.

ADHD is a chronic condition, and while there is no cure, effective management strategies can significantly reduce symptoms and improve functioning. With proper treatment and support, individuals with ADHD can lead fulfilling and successful lives.
